Founding of Ruger

William B. Ruger received his first gun, a rifle, from his father when he was 12 years old, and created the first draft of designs for a light machine gun that was used by the United States Army when he was in his early twenties in 1938. The business Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. was founded by Ruger and Alexander McCormick Sturm, a writer and in this case, investor, in 1949.

In 2010, Ruger received its fourth "Manufacturer of the Year Award" from the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers in a row. In 2004, the company teamed with TALO Distributors to create a commemorative pistol especially for the USA Shooting Team with profits from the sale of the special edition pistol being used to support the team. Ruger has also won the "Handgun of the Year" award for the Ruger SR9c in 2010 and the LCR in 2009 from the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence. Ruger also won the award in 2008.
